Flavour 101 | This Week’s Guide: How to Pair E-Liquid & Device for Max Flavour 🔬

Hello UV flavour fans!
Flavour Master here with this week’s Flavour 101, and today we’re diving deep into one of the most important (but often overlooked) topics:

How do you choose the right e-liquid + device combo, and what prep steps should you take to get the best flavour possible?

Whether you’re a flavour chaser or just tired of your favourite juice tasting “meh,” this one’s for you.

:puzzle_piece: Step 1: Know Your Vape Style – MTL vs. DTL

➤ MTL (Mouth to Lung) – similar to how you smoke a cigarette

  • :white_check_mark: Best with: high resistance coils (≥1.0Ω)
  • :white_check_mark: Pair with: 50/50 PG/VG or high-PG juices
  • :white_check_mark: Ideal for: nicotine salts, tighter draw, flavour precision

➤ DTL (Direct to Lung) – inhale straight to your lungs

  • :white_check_mark: Best with: low resistance coils (<1.0Ω)
  • :white_check_mark: Pair with: high-VG juices (70VG/30PG or higher)
  • :white_check_mark: Ideal for: freebase nicotine, bigger clouds, smoother throat hit

:test_tube: Step 2: Match Your E-Liquid to the Device

Juice Type Best for Device Type Why
50/50 (PG/VG) Pod kits, MTL tanks Better wicking, clean flavour, tight draw
70VG/30PG Sub-ohm mods, mesh coils Bigger clouds, smoother inhale
Nicotine Salt (20-50mg) Low-wattage MTL pods Faster absorption, less throat irritation
Freebase Nicotine Sub-ohm tanks, higher watts Stronger throat hit, better high-VG support

:light_bulb: Pro Tip: Using high-VG juice in a pod = dry hits and muted flavour. Using high-PG juice in a sub-ohm tank = leaking and harshness.

:hammer_and_wrench: Step 3: Pre-Vape Ritual – Prep Like a Pro

:white_check_mark: 1. Prime Your Coil
Before the first puff, always add a few drops of e-liquid directly onto the cotton in your coil to saturate it. This avoids burning and helps bring the flavour alive from puff #1.

:white_check_mark: 2. Let It Soak
Once the coil is installed and tank filled, let it sit for 5–10 minutes so the cotton fully absorbs the juice. This is especially important for thicker (VG-heavy) liquids.

:white_check_mark: 3. Adjust Your Wattage
Follow the coil’s recommended range. Start low and gradually increase until you find your sweet spot — usually where the flavour “blooms” without being too hot or harsh.

:white_check_mark: 4. Airflow Matters
Tighter airflow = better for MTL and subtle flavours
Looser airflow = better for DTL and dense vapour

Too much airflow can wash out flavour — play around to find the balance that works for your juice.

:bullseye: Bonus Tips for Flavour Chasers

  • Rotate Flavours – Avoid “flavour fatigue” by switching juices every few days
  • Clean Your Tank Regularly – Leftover residue dulls new flavours
  • Replace Coils Often – Burnt or overused coils = dull or nasty taste
  • Try Cooling Additives – A little menthol can enhance fruit and candy blends

Really good user guide!! I ALWAYS wash out my tank (just plain warm water, let it soak in the water if overly burnt taste), can’t be bothered with letting the liquid soak or priming once it’s all back together, instead I give it couple of ‘cold pulls’ and then start warming it up in increments of 3w or 5w, depending on device. Not failed me yet, as long as I put the right liquid into the right device

Is it a good idea to add juice flow control to sub-ohm coils? This would allow adjusting the size of the juice ports, making it possible to use thinner e-liquids (like 50/50 ) .most sub-ohm coils have large wicking ports to handle high-VG (thick) liquids, while can lead to flooding with thinner juices.

My new daily in fact all day vape iced caramel macchiato 60-40 ratio paired with my armour g at 35 watts on a 0.3 Gtx coil 6mg salt nic the flavour is amazing low ice level 2 im not a fan of ice but this is spot on gives that clear cool refreshing hit then the strong flavour bought this with another ice Lychee Mango I’ve yet to try .

Not me realizing I’ve never once primed a coil properly  Just straight up fill and fire.
Maybe that explains all the burnt hits I’ve been blaming on the juice :eyes:
Time to change my ways — RIP to the cotton I’ve roasted.

Prime. Soak. Start low.
3 steps that changed my flavour game forever. Thanks for the refresher

Big yes to matching juice to device. I made the mistake of using 35mg nic salts in a sub-ohm tank once… never again. Felt like I inhaled battery acid. For anyone using nic salts, stick to pods. Your throat will thank you

Haha guilty as charged :joy:
Honestly, I think we’ve all been there — prime it? Nah, just send it! But yeah, taking that extra 30 seconds saves a lot of heartache (and cotton). If you ever want a no-fuss priming hack, try pulling on the pod without firing a few times to draw the juice in — works like a charm.

Short, sweet, and 100% on point “Prime. Soak. Start low.” might need to go on a T-shirt for new vapers. Love to see folks simplifying the essentials like that — appreciate you dropping the wisdom!

Oof, yeah… 35mg salts in a sub-ohm tank is a quick way to turn lungs into lava
It’s all about matching the nic strength to the power output. Glad you found your groove with pods — they’ve come a long way, and salt flavours are so much better than they were even two years ago. Got a fav nic salt blend lately?

That’s a solid ritual, Andra — love the “cold pull and ramp-up” method! :light_bulb:
It’s a great way to get around long soak times while still avoiding dry hits. I totally agree: matching the liquid to the right device does most of the heavy lifting. It’s all about respecting the chemistry between coil, juice, and airflow — and it sounds like you’ve nailed that synergy. Appreciate you sharing your prep method here

Really interesting question — and you’re absolutely right! Most sub-ohm coils are designed for high-VG juice, so thinner 50/50 blends can flood them quickly. Juice flow control would be a game-changer for making sub-ohm vaping more versatile. Some rebuildable tanks do offer it, but seeing it in stock coils would open up a lot of flavour options for users who love thinner blends. Definitely a topic worth exploring further — thanks for bringing it up!

That iced caramel macchiato sounds insanely good — creamy with a chill hit? You’ve got my attention
I’m usually not a fan of iced dessert blends either, but the way you describe that balance has me curious. Low ice level 2 might be the sweet spot. Let us know how that Lychee Mango one turns out — sounds like another awesome summer hit!
