Hey guys, letās be honest. Innovation is exciting: adjustable wattage, Bluetooth connectivity, smart apps, even devices that track your puffs or sync with music. But when does āmoreā stop being meaningful?
In the race for the next āfeatureā, the core question becomes: Are we still serving the user ā or serving complexity?
Thereās a real risk that in adding AI temperature control, multiple modes, over-the-top graphics, we forget the fundamentals: consistent flavor, reliability, good ergonomics, and intuitive use.
Think about this: You have a device that can show you puff analytics, adapt to coil condition, and switch modes via app. But if itās heavier, more complex, drains battery faster, or costs more ā is that ābetterā?
Your perspective:
Would you welcome a fully programmable smart vape ā or do you prefer something simpler, more intuitive?
Where should the line be drawn between being feature-rich and being user-friendly?
For casual users or long-time users, features like puff analytics or Bluetooth connectivity are often unused. What they need is simply a device that is comfortable to hold, easy to recharge, delivers consistent flavor, and is durable. Complexity can be intimidating for beginners and cumbersome for experienced users.
For āTech Enthusiastsā or āPower Usersā, perhaps yes. They enjoy data, graphs, and the ability to adjust settings down to the smallest details. For this segment, complexity is a feature, not a bug.
However, for the majority of users, ābetterā means:
Reliability: No leaks, no errors, and long-lasting.
Comfort (Ergonomics & Usability): Lightweight, fits well in the hand, and easy to use without having to consult a manual.
Core Performance: Consistent flavor and satisfying vapor production.
Value: A price that is commensurate with its performance and durability.
If adding features ends up sacrificing these fundamental aspects, then it is not ābetter,ā but rather āworse with unnecessary added features.ā
Thank you for the thoughtful analysis. I agree that before debating whether feature innovation has gone too far, we should first clarify the target user segments and their most fundamental expectations. Once the core or foundational needs are consistently metāfor example, stable and consistent flavor, a carry-friendly weight, and robust battery life or fast chargingāitās reasonable, and even desirable, to encourage measured, forward-looking innovation on top.
Innovation is important, but true innovation should not just be about adding new features. Innovation can mean perfecting the fundamentals creating more efficient chips, designing more ergonomic bodies, developing longer-lasting coils, or simplifying the user interface. This piece is a great reminder that technology is ultimately just a tool, and its purpose is to serve the user, not to impress them with complexity.
Personal perspective - Iāve done the fancy āhigh techā devices and simple ones. While I definitely would appreciate being able to connect my phone to my vape so that I could add it as a tag on āFind My,ā I think anything beyond that is just too excessive. Gone Are the days where drippers ruled the world and having different settings worked in our favour, but now I donāt need my vape to remember 7 different power settings because lets be honest- we donāt switch out our flavours every 3 puffs anymore, so all those extra options just add complications specially to new users. Pre made coils these days donāt support Ni, Ti, and temp control options so why are they even there? even for trippers, most coils support only wattage control, and anything extra is just asking for trouble.
I just need the vape to switch on, last me the day (or 2!), deliver good flavour and just work.
Thatās a really fair point. sometimes it feels like brands keep adding more features just because the competition is heating up or something more technical is coming out, not necessarily because users need them. I totally agree that simplicity and reliability should come first. At the end of the day, what really matters is a vape that turns on instantly, lasts long, and just delivers great flavor without extra steps. Appreciate your honest take ā itās a good reminder for all of us in the industry to innovate with purpose, not just for show.
