👀 Facial Recognition & Vapes — Is This the Future of Responsible Buying?

Just saw the latest news about new facial recognition rules rolling out — the ones that require clear consent before collecting face data and limit how it can be used. It got me thinking about one specific area where this tech could actually make a real impact: e-cigarette sales and youth access.
(If you missed the update, the new rules basically say systems can’t just scan your face without your permission, and must give people a way to opt out — even in places like hotels or access gates.)

When it comes to e-cigs, one of the biggest public health concerns has always been how easily minors can access products online or in stores. Facial recognition — done right, transparently, and ethically — could be a tool to help prevent underage purchases while still keeping adult users safe and compliant.

But here’s the twist: it has to be done responsibly. Just putting a scanner on every checkout station without consent would obviously be creepy and potentially invasive. That’s why the new rules — which emphasize consent and secondary verification — feel like a step in the right direction.

Imagine this:
:check_mark: Age verification that works instantly but still protects privacy
:check_mark: A system that adults can opt into for smooth checkout
:check_mark: No “dodgy loops” for teens trying to get around age checks
:check_mark: Better alignment with both safety and user experience

Of course, there are valid concerns about data storage, misuse, and who actually gets to hold your biometric info. But if we’re talking about reducing youth access without turning every store into Big Brother, this might be one of the less-ugly options.

What do you all think?
Would you support facial recognition being used (with consent) to make e-cig purchases safer — especially for preventing teen access? Or is it too invasive no matter what? Let’s dig in :backhand_index_pointing_down:
