Flavour 101: What’s in Your Vape Juice?

Hey UV fam! Welcome to Flavour 101, a new series where we break down everything you need to know about vape flavors and e-liquids—from beginner basics to advanced insights. Whether you’re just starting your vape journey or you’re deep into the world of custom blends, this is your go-to spot for learning and discussing all things vape juice.

So, What’s in Vape Juice?

At its core, every bottle of e-liquid (aka vape juice) is made up of a few key ingredients:

:small_blue_diamond: Vegetable Glycerin (VG) – The Cloud maker

VG is a thick, slightly sweet liquid that produces dense vapor and adds a smooth mouthfeel. The higher the VG, the bigger the clouds—perfect for cloud chasers and sub-ohm vapers!

:small_blue_diamond: Propylene Glycol (PG) – The Flavor Carrier

PG is thinner than VG and enhances flavor intensity while delivering a stronger throat hit (similar to traditional cigarettes). Higher PG juices are great for MTL (mouth-to-lung) vaping and those who enjoy a more pronounced flavor experience.

:small_blue_diamond: Nicotine - The Optional Magic Potion

Not all e-liquids contain nicotine, but for those that do, it comes in different forms:

  • Freebase Nicotine – Traditional nicotine with a stronger throat hit, usually found in lower concentrations.
  • Nicotine Salts – A smoother alternative that allows for higher nicotine levels without harshness, ideal for pod systems.

:small_blue_diamond: Flavorings :strawberry::cookie::herb:

This is where the magic happens! Vape flavors come from food-grade flavorings, the same kind used in candies, sodas, and other consumables. Whether you’re into fruity, dessert, menthol, or tobacco blends, the possibilities are endless.

How Do Different Ratios Affect Your Vape? :microscope:

Understanding VG/PG ratios helps you choose the right juice for your setup:
:white_check_mark: High VG (70% VG or more) → Bigger clouds, smoother inhale, less throat hit. Best for sub-ohm tanks and DL (direct-lung) vaping.
:white_check_mark: High PG (50% PG or more) → Stronger throat hit, more intense flavor, thinner vapor. Best for pod systems and MTL setups.
:white_check_mark: 50/50 VG/PG → A balanced mix of clouds and flavor, compatible with most devices.

Okay, but has anyone actually tried a vape juice with no artificial sweeteners? Does it really taste that different? I’ve always been a dessert flavor fan, but now I’m wondering if I should switch to something cleaner to make my coils last longer

Great post! Now I know my vape juice is basically a mix of science and flavor magic. Just need someone to invent a ‘guilt-free’ sweetener that doesn’t wreck coils or taste weird.

@Frin you can purchase flavourless e juice online or from some retailers or can make your own it tastes a little sweet but no flavours added coils last longer as there is no sugars that carmalise and gunk up coils.
