5 Common Mistakes New Vapers Make and How to Avoid Them

Starting out with vaping? We’ve all been there—trying to figure out devices, juice, coils, and why your vape suddenly tastes like burnt toast. To save you the trial-and-error headache, here are 5 rookie mistakes people often make when they first start vaping — and how to avoid them.

1. Picking the Wrong Device :dashing_away:

If you’ve ever bought a huge, flashy vape mod on day one and immediately regretted it… yeah, same. A lot of beginners go straight for the biggest cloud machine they can find, but those setups can be a bit much when you’re just getting started.

What to do instead:
Start simple. A pod system or easy-to-use pen works great for beginners. Less settings, less fuss — more chill.

2. Wrong Nicotine Level = Bad Time :name_badge:

Too much nicotine? Hello nausea and head rush. Too little? You’re puffing non-stop but still craving a cigarette. It’s a fine line.

How to fix it:
If you used to smoke, higher-nicotine salt nic juice (like 20mg) might feel more satisfying. Just vaping for vibes? Go with a lower level. Either way, don’t be afraid to experiment until it feels right.

3. Not Letting the Coil Soak :sponge:
We get it — you just got your vape, you filled the tank, and you’re ready to go. But if you don’t wait for the coil to soak, that first hit is going to taste like burnt cotton. And once it’s burnt, it’s done.

The move:
After filling, let it sit for at least 5–10 minutes. Or better yet, drip a few drops directly onto the coil cotton before you close everything up. Burnt hits are a quick way to ruin your day.

4. Chain Vaping :chains:
Puff-puff-puff… and now your throat feels like sandpaper. Chain vaping too fast overheats the coil and dries out the wick, which leads to dry hits and harshness.

Keep it cool:
Take a few seconds between each puff. Give the coil time to catch up. It’s not a race — chill and enjoy the flavor.

5. Skipping Basic Maintenance :kangaroo:
Coils don’t last forever. Juice can gunk things up. And if your battery’s acting weird, it might be time for a cleanup or swap.

Just do this:
Change your coils regularly (usually every week or two, depending on use). Wipe down your device now and then. Keep the contacts clean. It takes two minutes but makes a big difference.

What’s the biggest mistake you made as a new vaper? Be honest :joy: Drop your comments!

First time vaping, I cranked the wattage to the max… coughed for 3 days straight

I started with a Vaporesso Swag Kit. The first one. Within a month I had an RTA given to me and never looked back. Only use RTA’s now on dual battery mods.

Maybe almost everyone initially felt like that, yes, it is true that experience is valuable knowledge

When I first started to vape the vape shop recommended the inokin coolfire it had a tank so couldn’t taste anything from it pods were not invented then lol my friends all had big mods so I followed suit and bought a smok device 200watt big brick device and arms like popeye to use it the coils were massive so dry hits were worse then :joy: needless to say I went back to smoking .

Since then, I don’t mess around with strong nicotine anymore

I turned on the switch before filling the oil, which caused the coil to burn dry. I even smelled a burning smell. RIP my first pod.
